US wireless technologies specialist Qualcomm has secured a multi-year deal to become the official technology partner of Formula One motor racing champion Mercedes.
Qualcomm will work alongside Mercedes to develop connected car technologies to assist the team’s performance.
Current and future projects will target real-time data transmission, sensor networks and wireless charging integration.
Qualcomm branding will feature on Mercedes’ car from the 2015 season and also on driver attire and team apparel.
Derek Aberle, president of Qualcomm, said: “With Mercedes-Benz leading the motorsports circuit, this collaboration provides a prominent testing ground for new technology advancements. We're looking forward to helping the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team rise to the next level and as a result, refine some of the industry's most sophisticated auto technologies.”
Mercedes will defend both the constructors’ and drivers’ world championships when the 2015 F1 season gets underway with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 15.
