The Australian Capital Territory government has secured the first naming sponsor for Stadium Canberra, with GIO Insurance agreeing an initial four-year deal for the rights.
Under the agreement, which takes effect from January 1, the facility will be renamed as GIO Stadium Canberra.
The value of the sponsorship exceeds A$1m (€698,000/$948,000) over the initial term, with the option of a further four-year extension.
Stadium Canberra is the home ground of NRL rugby league club Canberra Raiders and Super Rugby franchise the ACT Brumbies.
Chris McHugh, executive general manager of GIO Insurance, said: “GIO is a national insurer and having the Raiders playing their home games at GIO Stadium Canberra will bring fantastic exposure through the NRL competition. GIO sponsors the (New South Wales) Blues in the rugby league State of Origin series, and this commitment is a further demonstration in our support for the code.”
