Hamburg arena naming rights switch from O2 to Barclaycard

Payment services firm Barclaycard has enhanced its portfolio of naming rights partnerships with multi-purpose arenas by taking over the contract for the O2 World facility in Hamburg, Germany.

Under the 10-year contract with arena operator Anschutz Entertainment Group, the naming rights to the facility will pass from the telecommunications brand to Barclaycard on July 1.

The future Barclaycard Arena hosts home games for the city’s Handball Bundesliga and DEL ice hockey teams, Hamburg SV and Hamburg Freezers.

Barclaycard will fit out the arena so that it can accommodate contactless payments, while its latest deal adds to similar partnerships with the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, England and the Barclaycard Center in Madrid, Spain.

Hamburg’s Barclaycard Arena opened in November 2002 and has a seating capacity of 16,000.
