Barcelona Council lends name to F1 track

Barcelona City Council has agreed a naming-rights sponsorship agreement with the home of Formula One’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Under the terms of the deal, the Circuit de Catalunya – home to the Spanish leg of the championship since 1991 – will now be known as the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as the parties involved look to “bind the tourist attractions of the city with the activities of the racetrack”.

Vicenç Aguilera, president of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Consortium, said: “The city of Barcelona has a lot of strength and a great international projection, and therefore we believe that the new name, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, will help us to boost the facilities much more strongly, just as we have been doing in recent years with the promotion of the F1 and MotoGP grands prix.”

A logo incorporating the design of the circuit, a representation of the map of Catalonia and a chequered flag will be rolled out to promote the new partnership and name.

The 2013 edition of the Spanish Grand Prix saw weekend crowds up from around 185,000 in the corresponding 2012 event to 218,331 in May this year. The circuit hosted its annual MotoGP race on June 16.
