River Plate retains longstanding adidas deal

ADIDAS HAS EXTENDED its kit supply deal with Argentine football giant River Plate through to December 2018.

The partnership between the German sportswear brand and the Buenos Aires-based club first began 30 years ago.

Adidas has reportedly only enjoyed lengthier partnerships with the Deutscher Fussball-Bund (German Football Association) and German football behemoth Bayern Munich.

“The extension of our contract with River Plate confirms our successful and long-term relationship,” said Walter Koll, general manager of adidas Argentina.

“We are proud to sponsor the club and continue this bond. The announcement reinforces our position as the leading brand in Argentina.”

The deal leaves the club in sound commercial health having signed a front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with BBVA Frances – the Argentinean arm of the Spanish bank – earlier this year.

The two year-deal, which will also saw BBVA sponsoring rivals Boca Juniors, is worth around $3.5m to River Plate.

The club – which regained its status in the country's top flight this season after relegation from the Primera Division for the first time in its 110-year history in 2011 – can also count Coca-Cola and MasterCard as commercial partners.
