Malaysian telco Maxis signs sponsorship deal with top esports gaming team

Malaysian telco Maxis Communications have signed a sponsorship deal with professional esports club Team Secret, currently the top Dota 2 team in the world.

Maxis is the first Malaysian sponsor of Team Secret’s all-Malaysian PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) mobile gaming team, which are also the only all-Malaysian team to qualify for the PUBG Mobile Club Open 2019 Global Championship, held in Berlin, Germany.

Maxis’ head of brand and marketing Tai Kam Leong said to the theedgemarkets.com: “The gaming industry is a huge industry that spans across any age group for mobile, home fibre, personal computer and console, and we will go in the direction that the industry wants us to go.”

Maxis will develop exclusive gaming content with Team Secret, offer gaming smartphone bundles, and provide easy in-game purchase options for its Malaysian customers as part of this sponsorship campaign.

In 2018 the Malaysian government allocated funds in their annual budget to esports, recognising it as an activity and industry with potential. Esports will also feature in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, to be held in the Philippines this November.
