Financial services company CIMB Group has extended its title sponsorship of the CIMB Classic golf event, which is held annually in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The new four-year deal will cover the 2016 to 2020 editions of the tournament, which is sanctioned by the PGA Tour, Asian Tour and Professional Golf Association of Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur-headquartered CIMB Group has sponsored the event since its inception in 2010. It became a FedExCup tournament on the PGA Tour in 2013. CIMB’s continued backing will allow the event to retain its status as the richest in Southeast Asia with a purse of $7m (€6.3m).
“Since its inception six years ago, the CIMB Classic has established an important international presence for the Tour during the early portion of the FedExCup schedule,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said. “As a preeminent banking institution in Southeast Asia that is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, CIMB has provided the critical support needed for the tournament to develop and prosper.”
This year’s CIMB Classic will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club from October 20-23. Justin Thomas (pictured) of the US is the defending champion.
