US horse-racing event the Kentucky Derby has signed a two-year sponsorship deal with Mexican beer brand Corona Extra, along with another agreement with cider brand Angry Orchard.
Corona Extra will serve as the official import beer of the event, which takes place at the Churchill Downs racecourse and this year coincides with the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 5.
As part of the agreement, fans will be able to join the ‘Corona de Mayo’ fiesta at the brand’s activation zone at Churchill Downs. Corona will also sponsor Derby-viewing Cinco de Mayo parties by providing social content for fans.
“We’re excited to partner with Corona and to offer a new infield experience to our guests at the Derby,” Kristin Warfield, vice-president of partnerships at Churchill Downs Racetrack, said.
“Derby weekend is something our fans and guests look forward to all year, and now with this partnership, we’re able to bring that Cinco de Mayo energy Corona is known for to the celebration this year.”
Angry Orchard has agreed a deal to become the official cider of the race. According to the MediaPost website, Angry Orchard will take on naming rights to Churchill Downs’ Starting Gate Lounge as part of the agreement, the length of which was not disclosed.
This year’s Derby will feature a $2m (€1.6m) prize fund.
