German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen has elected to continue its partnership with Grizzlys Wolfsburg, which competes in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, the top division of ice hockey in Germany.
Volkswagen will remain the club’s main sponsor. The duration of its ongoing commitment was not disclosed.
The announcement comes as Volkswagen continues to deal with the fallout of the emissions scandal that hit the company in September. Volkswagen admitted to cheating diesel emissions tests on its vehicles in the United States and the wider repercussions of the scandal have called into question its wide-ranging backing of German sport.
“We all know about the current situation of the Volkswagen Group and the economic impact on the city and the region,” Bernd Rumpel, managing director of finance and control at the Grizzlys, said. “That is why we are very pleased that we have received a positive decision on the continuation of the sports sponsorship before Christmas. With the means at our disposal we will continue now at very short notice to prepare for managing the economic and sporting level planning and then match these together with our board.”
