Japanese commercial electronics company Rakuten has been added to the list of official bid partners for Tokyo 2020, the city’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games.
Rakuten, which becomes the 21st corporate partner of the bid, will now collaborate with the bid committee in its attempt to capture the Summer Games.
It will join fellow Japanese businesses such as Asics, Toyota, Japan Airlines and Aoki Holdings in becoming an official bid partner to Tokyo 2020 ahead of next month’s decision over the destination of the event.
Masato Mizuno, Tokyo 2020 chief executive officer, said: “Tokyo 2020 offers certainty in times of uncertainty, and Rakuten's enlistment as an official bid partner underscores the Japanese business community's strong desire to contribute its knowhow, technologies and creativity toward a dynamic Tokyo 2020.”
The International Olympic Committee will announce the 2020 host city at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 7
