Telekom Malaysia signs record deal with local football body

Football Malaysia, the organising body of club football competition in the country, has agreed a major sponsorship and media rights deal with Telekom Malaysia, an agreement it claims is the biggest to date in domestic sport.

Under the agreement, TM’s unifi brand, which was recently formed to bring together the telco’s services, becomes title sponsor for the top-tier Liga Super and Piala Malaysia, as well as a co-sponsor for the latter’s fellow knockout tournament Piala FA.

The eight-year deal takes effect from this season and will run until 2025. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Goal.com website said the contract is worth RM480m (€99.75m/$122m).

As the broadcast partner, TM said unifi TV will showcase all Football Malaysia events and competitions, which include the Piala Sumbangsih, Liga Super, Piala Malaysia, Piala FA as well as conditional broadcast benefits for the Liga Premier, Challenge Cup and all other matches.

Football Association of Malaysia president and Football Malaysia chairman, the Crown Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim, said: “I am very happy with this landmark partnership, which is the biggest in Malaysian sports history. It is a testament to TM’s confidence that football and the Malaysian league is a key commercial and unity driver in this country.”
