Qatar Airways has agreed a deal to become the official airline sponsor of the country’s staging of the International Cycling Union’s 2016 Road World Championships.
Qatar’s national carrier will fly competitors to take part in the first edition of the Championships to be held in the Middle East, while Qatar Airways Cargo will transport road bikes to Doha.
The Qatari capital will serve as the main hub of the event, which runs from October 9-16.
Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Thani, chairman of the organising committee of Doha 2016, said: “Thousands of fans, cyclists, and sports officials will be descending on Doha for this high-profile World Championships event making Qatar Airways the perfect partner to bring the world to Doha.
“Our event will feature a number of key landmarks across Qatar, including Qatar Foundation's Education City, Lusail, and the centre stage of our event, The Pearl-Qatar. It is due to the commitment of our partners that this Championships event places Doha in the limelight for world of cycling.”
The Road World Championships head to Qatar having been held in the US city of Richmond last year.
