Kenya Airways has announced a 58m Kenyan shilling (€511,000/$667,000) sponsorship package for the country’s 2013 Masai Mara Marathon, according to the StarAfrica website.
The Kenyan national airline’s deal includes the naming rights to this year’s event, which will now be known as the Kenya Airways Masai Mara Marathon.
In addition, Kenya Airways will also sponsor the top five winners from the race to take part in the 2014 London Marathon.
Titus Naikuni, Kenya Airways chief executive officer and group managing director, said the firm was keen to extend its sponsorship of the event, having supported the annual marathon since its inception in 2009.
He added: “This is in line with our aim of contributing towards sustainable development in the country by highlighting sports tourism and other attractions. It is also a means of giving back to the community by raising funds for projects in the community.”
Funds raised by this year’s race, which is scheduled to take place on October 5, will help support various projects in Kenya. These include addressing gaps in education, access to medical facilities, improving sanitation utilities, anti-poaching projects and the provision of clean drinking water.
