Gazprom strikes Russian Olympic renewal

Russia’s state-owned energy giant Gazprom has extended its support of the Russian Olympic Committee to include the 2016 Olympic Games and 2018 winter Games.

Gazprom has previously provided sponsorship to support Russian athletes in their training for the Athens 2004 and London 2012 summer Games, along with the Salt Lake City 2002 and Sochi 2014 winter Olympics.

As part of Russia’s preparations for hosting Sochi 2014, Gazprom assisted in the building of infrastructure and sports facilities including the Mountain Olympic Village and the Biathlon and Ski Complex.

Gazprom chairman Alexey Miller said: “It is important that Gazprom carries out social tasks and offers sufficient support for sports activities across Russia. In this respect, the company's focus is on the Russian Olympic movement. Olympic victories always make us feel proud of our country. Like the whole of Russia, Gazprom will carry on making its contribution to Olympic achievements of the Russian athletes.”

The financial terms of the latest agreement between the ROC and Gazprom were not disclosed.
