Chicago Sky joins WNBA’s jersey sponsorship set with Magellan deal

Women’s National Basketball Association team Chicago Sky has signed an expanded sponsorship agreement with Magellan under which the steel distributor will become its first dedicated jersey partner.

Financial terms of the multi-year agreement, which Chicago Sky claims as the biggest corporate deal in its 10-year history, were not disclosed.

Magellan’s logo will feature on the upper left shoulder of Chicago Sky’s playing jerseys. It will also benefit from branding on news conference backdrops and in-arena promotion of its affiliated charities.

The WNBA’s 12 teams are included in a league-wide jersey sponsorship agreement with pre-paid wireless services company Boost Mobile. Last season Washington, Indiana, Tulsa, Minnesota, San Antonio and Phoenix were the only teams with an individual sponsor to feature alongside Boost.

Sky’s deal with Magellan to join this group of teams was welcomed by its chief executive Adam Fox. "It's a big deal," he told the Crain’s Chicago Business website. “This is the kind of thing that serves notice to others in town that there is value in working with us not only for the return on investment, but in being a great corporate citizen.”

Magellan boasts a number of partnerships with Chicago’s sports teams including Chicago Bulls of the NBA, Major League Soccer franchise Chicago Fire, Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League and Major League Baseball duo Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs.
