Bridgestone tees up WGC extension

Tyre manufacturer Bridgestone has extended its title sponsorship of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational tournament at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio through to 2018.

The deal was announced prior to the leaders teeing off in the final round of this year’s event on Sunday.

Bridgestone’s naming rights association with the WGC started in 2006 and under the new deal it extends both its relationship as an Official Marketing Partner of the PGA Tour and the official tyre of the PGA Tour and Champions Tour. The previous agreement was due to run through 2014.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said: “Coupled with their official marketing partnership extension, Bridgestone represents one of the largest partners within the PGA Tour family. They utilise the PGA Tour platform on a global scale, activating in impactful and innovative ways, not only in the United States but across Asia and most notably in Japan.”

The Bridgestone Invitational is one of four World Golf Championships sanctioned and organised by the operational committee of the International Federation of PGA Tours, which includes the Asian Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia and Sunshine Tour. The other World Golf Championships include the Accenture Match Play Championship, Cadillac Championship and the HSBC Champions.
