Biotechnology company Amgen has renewed its title sponsorship of the Tour of California cycling road race.
Amgen, which has held the designation since the event’s debut edition in 2006, struck its latest deal with the Tour of California’s owner and operator AEG.
The company’s previous contract had expired following the 2013 Tour, but the Los Angeles Times newspaper said it has agreed terms on a multi-year extension.
Alongside the sponsorship, Amgen will run initiatives to raise awareness surrounding serious illnesses such as cancer and cardiovascular disease while promoting healthy lifestyles.
An expanded presence at the Tour of California will allow Amgen to build on its Breakaway from Cancer campaign, honouring cancer survivors in a number of ways throughout the eight-day race. Such celebrations include jersey presentations and “Breakaway Mile” walks along the course to benefit community members affected by cancer.
The 2013 Tour of California was won by US rider Tejay van Garderen for the BMC Racing team.
