Spanish electricity provider Feníe Energía has switched its commercial partnership with the Vuelta a España to sponsor the event’s new new white jersey, which will be worn by the best young cyclist in the peloton.
Feníe Energía, which has been one of the Vuelta’s main sponsors since 2017, had previously sponsored the ‘most aggressive rider’ award.
The white jersey previously symbolised the leading rider in the combined ranking. The combined ranking jersey will disappear, although its sponsor, fertilisers and industrial chemicals producer Fertiberia, will continue to have a relationship with the Vuelta, the race’s organisers said.
Under the new approach, the top competitor under the age of 26 will wear the white jersey.
In the absence of a dedicated jersey, the best young cyclist award was previously represented by a trophy, which was sponsored by AS, the race’s official newspaper.
The length of the new agreement with Feníe Energía was not revealed, but the deal will begin with the 2019 edition of the Vuelta.
