Spanish Liga top-tier football club Valencia has become the first sports team to seal a global partnership with the UN Women division of the United Nations.
Under the terms of the deal, the logo of UN Women, which promotes and supports gender equality across the globe, will be placed on the back of the Valencia players’ shirts.
The deal will cover games in European competitions, with Valencia having secured a place in the 2015-16 Uefa Champions League.
The deal will run for four years, from 2015-16 to 2018-19, during which Valencia will take part in special matches in Spain and the Americas to promote the cause.
“This is a long-term commitment to really help make a difference to expand advocacy efforts towards gender equality,” Valencia chairwoman Layhoon Chan said. “It’s not only a women’s issue, it’s a human rights issue that Valencia strongly believes in.”
