Mining company Antofagasta Minerals has been named as the title sponsor of next year’s Formula E race in Santiago, which will mark Chile’s debut in the electric car-racing series.
The event will take place on February 3 and will be the fourth leg of the 2018 Formula E season.
The track layout for the race was also confirmed, with drivers to line up along Avenue Santa Maria before navigating through Parque Forestal, against the backdrop of Cerro San Cristobal and Santa Lucia Hill. The track will also cross the River Mapocho and run through Pizza Italia.
Ivan Arriagada, chief executive of Antofagasta Minerals, said: “We’re proud to sponsor this world-class event that will debut this February in Chile, as we believe that copper plays a key role in achieving a more sustainable world like the one we all dream of. Not only do you find it in emissions-free electric vehicles, but also it's intensively used in the growing presence of non-conventional energy sources, like the wind and sun.
“We believe that Formula E contributes to promoting the use of electric vehicles, which not only improves the outlook for the copper market, but contributes to a cleaner world, by concretely helping to decontaminate our cities.”
Chile was announced as a new Formula E host destination back in June. Sao Paulo in Brazil and the Italian capital of Rome will also make their series debuts next year.
