Telecom Namibia has partnered with the Confederation of African Football to become the headline sponsor of the 2014 African Women’s Championship, in a deal worth N$6m (€422,500/$580,000).
The ninth edition of the biennial women’s football tournament takes place in Namibia from October 11-25 and will be officially known as TN Mobile African Women’s Championship Namibia 2014 under CAF’s agreement with the state-owned telecommunications company.
Frans Ndoroma, managing director of Telecom Namibia, said: “Our decision to sponsor the tournament was two-fold – primarily it is a strategic business move but it should not take away from the ambition to promote the country's ability to stage an event of the magnitude of the African Women’s Championships. As a fully-fledged state-owned enterprise, we pride ourselves with a deep-rooted sense of duty to support corporate social investment initiatives.”
Seven teams will join the host nation in the final tournament, which doubles up as a qualifier for the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada. Nigeria (pictured) is currently the highest-ranked African team in Fifa’s World Rankings at No.34.
