Spanish retail distribution company Grupo DIA has been unveiled as the title sponsor of the top tier of domestic women’s basketball.
The agreement runs for two seasons and renames the competition as the Liga Dia. Grupo DIA signed the partnership with the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB).
The news comes after Tenerife in Spain was last week awarded hosting rights for the 2018 edition of the International Basketball Federation’s (Fiba) Women’s World Cup.
“The arrival of Grupo DIA to women's basketball is excellent news that helps us to dedicate more resources to our project of promotion and development of women's basketball in Spain,” FEB president Jorge Garbajosa said. “The Liga Dia will be an essential tool to make the 2018 Women's World Cup in Tenerife an absolute success.”
Grupo DIA last year partnered with the league on the Universo Mujer Baloncesto initiative, which is designed to promote the development of women in society and sport.
