Malaysia Airports has reached an agreement to sponsor this year’s Southeast Asian Games multi-sport event, which will be staged in the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.
The company, which manages five international airports in Malaysia, will serve as a welcoming partner of the Games under the gold sponsor category.
The deal, which Malaysia Airports signed with the Malaysian Organising Committee (MASOC), also includes the ASEAN Para Games, which Kuala Lumpur will stage shortly after the able-bodied event.
As part of the agreement, Malaysia Airports will assist in the promotion of the Games through digital screens at its airports around the country.
The deal means MASOC has now raised a total of RM67m (€14.1m/$15.1m) in sponsorship fees for the Games. The figure represents 84 per cent of the committee’s RM80m target.
Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Deputy Minister, Datuk M Saravanan, said that RM47m of the money raised so far would be delivered in the form of products and services. The committee had set out to raise RM30m in cash and RM50m in products and services.
Saravanan said: “The involvement of Malaysia Airports is a milestone for KL2017, as this sponsorship comes from an industry which has no direct relation to sports. However, this does not make the contribution any less significant than others. In fact, it is a noteworthy contribution especially when we take into account the excellent track record of Malaysia Airports.”
The SEA Games will run from August 19-31, with the ASEAN Para Games to take place from September 17-23.
