Dutch brewing company Heineken has agreed a deal to become the title sponsor of the top division of Spanish rugby union.
Under the agreement with the Spanish Rugby Federation (FER), the competition will be known as the Liga Heineken. The length of the deal was not disclosed.
It is hoped the partnership will help raise the profile of rugby in Spain, with the national team seeking to qualify for the 2019 World Cup in Japan. “We hope that with this deal we are spoken about more and we can gradually approach the leading sports in our country,” FER president Alfonso Feijóo said.
Heineken has a strong presence within the sport and earlier this year strengthened its long-running partnership with World Rugby after agreeing a deal to sponsor the 2019 World Cup in Japan. It has also supported the FER for the past five years.
