Australia’s Gold Coast Airport has agreed a deal to sponsor the region's staging of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, while supermarket chain Woolworths has also been named as a partner of next year’s edition of the multi-sport event.
Gold Coast Airport will serve as an official airport and official supplier of the Games.
The partnership was marked with the opening of the Games’ first official merchandise store at the airport.
Peter Beattie, chairman of the Gold Coast Organising Committee (GOLDOC), said: “Our partnership with GCA allows us to work closely with the airport so it is in the best position to deal with the inevitable spike in traffic leading up to, during and after the Games.
“GCA have been a strong supporter of the Games since the bid phase and in addition to becoming a member of the GC2018 sponsor family, today we’ve opened the first official GC2018 store in the main terminal. This is the first time a Commonwealth Games store has been located at an airport and will be the first of 30 locations to open ahead of the Games.”
Woolworths, meanwhile, has been named as the official supermarket and fresh food supporter of the Games, which will take place from April 4-15 next year.
Gold Coast 2018 merchandise will be sold in Woolworths stores across Australia as part of the agreement.
