South African Premier Soccer League team Ajax Cape Town has reached a two-year agreement to make Chinese telecommunications company Huawei its official shirt sponsor.
The deal marks Huawei’s first sponsorship move into the South African market and expands an already substantial football portfolio.
Huawei is an official partner of Eredivisie champion Ajax – the Dutch parent club of Ajax Cape Town – along with Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04.
Wilson Liu, general manager of Huawei South Africa, said: “This is our first, but certainly not last, venture into sports sponsorship in the country. Many sports are recognised as being important to South African culture, and we want to show our commitment to the country through ongoing activities targeted at this audience.”
The financial terms of the sponsorship were not disclosed, while Huawei has the right to review the arrangement after one year and retains the option to extend for a further two years at the conclusion of the initial two-year period.
