Malaysian airline AirAsia has signed up as a gold sponsor of this year’s edition of the Southeast Asian Games multi-sport event, which will take place in Kuala Lumpur.
AirAsia will serve as the official airline partner of the event, and will provide between RM3m (€638,000/$677,000) and RM7.5m in cash and products or services to Games organisers.
This will include flight tickets for sports officials and individuals involved in Games events such as the Rising Together Baton Run and the KL2017 Torch Run.
“It is very evident that AirAsia is committed to giving back to the community via sports,” Khairy Jamaluddin, Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, said. “Sports indeed serves as a platform to unite people and with all they’ve been doing with sports, AirAsia is very much aware of this.”
Jamaluddin said the Malaysian Organising Committee (MASOC) has now achieved 88 per cent of its overall sponsorship target of RM80m. MASOC has so far raised RM70.5m, RM21m of which is cash sponsorship.
The SEA Games will run from August 19-31, with the ASEAN Para Games to follow from September 17-23.
