The Taipei City Government (TCG), the body that governs the capital of Chinese Taipei, has agreed a deal to sponsor the World Baseball Softball Confederation’s inaugural Premier12 tournament, which is currently taking place in the country and Japan.
The TCG hopes to use the tournament to establish Taipei as a major sporting city ahead of its hosting of the summer Universiade, a global multi-sport event competed by student-athletes, in 2017.
As part of the deal, the Universiade will be promoted at the Tienmu Baseball Stadium, which will host a number of Premier12 games.
Ko Wen-Je, the Mayor of Taipei City, said: “The 2017 Taipei Universiade will be an event not just for university athletes, but for all citizens of the world, as the event brings sports onto the centre-stage in our city. We are building world-class facilities, training top-tier athletes, and making the city of Taipei more competitive on the world stage as an attractive international sports venue, as we promote our diverse culture and creative talent to the world.
“We welcome our friends from all around the world to get to know and experience what Taipei has to offer.”
The Premier12 tournament began on Sunday and concludes on November 21. The 2017 summer Universiade takes place in Taipei City from August 19-30.
The sponsorship deal was brokered by the MP & Silva agency, WBSC’s global media and sponsorship rights partner.
