Often wheeled out to dismiss the tricks of the latest  lightweight, step-over king, it can equally be applied to entire teams who manage for a time to defy gravity only to succumb at the sharp end of the season: think Tottenham Hotspur under Harry Redknapp and his 'will he or won't he' link to the then-vacant England job.
