ON THE FACE of it the new head of supermarket group Tesco is cut from the same cloth as his predecessor but Philip Clarke is his own man. Despite both hailing from Liverpool, Clarke and Leahy are on opposite sides of the Mersey divide with the new man coming down firmly in the Reds camp. The son of a Tesco store manager in the Wirral, Clarke has led the company’s expansion in the Far East with a chain of stores in Japan and 38 hypermarkets in South Korea. A keen horseman and sailor, Clarke will need all his skill to lead the group which faces significant challenges around the world and in its own back yard. - 28/2/2011
