CARLOS SLIM is rumoured to be the world’s richest man and by any reckoning he is in a class of one in Mexico. Having made his money from a burgeoning telecoms business in Latin America he has switched focus to fine art by funding the Mexican equivalent of the Guggenheim. The Soumaya museum will house works from Van Gogh, Tintoretto, Ruben, Monet and Cezanne among others. Slim’s interest in fine art is in contrast to the sponsorship activities of his main mobile brand Telcel which backs a Nascar team and a notorious rock band competition, Rockampeonato making it one of Mexico’s biggest brands. - 3/3/2011
