Bwin hits stumbling block in Portuguese court

THE PATH OF a successful sponsorship doesn’t always run smoothly but Bwin.party, the world’s biggest listed online gaming company, has found its intentions firmly knocked back by regulators in Portugal. The company with a €4m deal with the Portuguese soccer league cup, the Taca da Liga, has had its activities ruled illegal by a court following an action brought by the local Casino Association and national lottery operator Santa Casa. The court ruling is based on a perceived unfair advantage that benefits Bwin as it is not taxed or subject to local regulation.
