QUINTESSENTIAL ITALIAN car brand Fiat is giving its local customers an identity crisis. The automaker is said to be planning a merger with Chrysler and to be considering moving its stock market listing to the US. The team at the top of the company, John Elkann, heir to the Agnelli family business and CEO Sergio Marchionne have revived the fortunes of the company over the past 10 years but the tie up with Chrysler would propel it back into the big league. The combined company would have output of 6m cars per year but Elkann is keen to emphasise the firms Italian heritage saying: “I think Fiat is a great example of how an Italian business can globalise.” - 7/3/2011
