Volvo Ocean Race calls up Truphone

UK-based mobile voice and data services company Truphone has agreed a three-year deal to become an official supplier of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Truphone will provide all members of staff at the global sailing event with a mobile phone and SIM card that supports multiple international numbers that operate as if they are making local calls. The network operator recently launched plans that allow such use of mobile phones and tablets in 66 countries.

The Volvo Ocean Race stops in China, New Zealand, Brazil, USA, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and Sweden – all of which are operating regions for Truphone.

Volvo Ocean Race technical director Jordi Neves said: “We always wanted to have a mobile phone with multiple international numbers sharing a common voice and data plan. Truphone is not just delivering this solution but also a remarkable cost saving and support team devoted to our needs wherever we are.”

The 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race starts on October 4 in Alicante, Spain and will visit 10 other countries on five continents, with the fleet covering 38,739 nautical miles before the conclusion in Gothenburg on June 27, 2015.
