NBA’s Rockets team up with cryptocurrency firm

Bitmain Technologies-owned bitcoin mining company AntPool has signed a sponsorship deal with NBA basketball franchise the Houston Rockets.

The agreement will cover the upcoming 2018-19 season and has been signed following the recent announcement that AntPool, a China-based company, has chosen Houston as its destination for US expansion.

The partnership will result in an AntPool exhibition being held at the Rockets’ Toyota Center arena on January 19, 2019.

Haijiao Li, AntPool’s overseas operations manager, said: “As the cryptocurrency industry around the globe continues to evolve and develop, it is going to be more and more important for companies like AntPool to lead the conversation and conversion of consumers to adopt and understand digital currencies. It is an exciting time, and we welcome Rockets fans and those traveling to Houston to visit our showcase at Toyota Center and learn more about the technology that will change the world.”

AntPool mines the second largest amount of Bitcoins in the world – roughly 15 per cent of all blocks.

The partnership is understood to be a three-season deal, from 2019-20 to 2021-22, and builds on AXA’s existing Global Partner agreement with Liverpool.

The deal is the largest ever sponsorship investment in UK women’s sport and comes less than a year after the league went fully professional in September 2018.

Under the five-year global deal, Oppo will become the first Official Smartphone Partner of The Championships, Wimbledon, as the event is officially known.

US sportswear brand Nike is paying about $7.5m (€6.7m) per year to sponsor China’s League of Legends Pro League (LPL), according to industry sources.
