Kuala Lumpur 2017 signs latest partner

Plastic products manufacturer SCGM Berhad has agreed a deal to sponsor this year’s Southeast Asian Games multi-sport event, which will take place in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

SCGM Berhad has been assigned silver sponsor status and will also serve as the ‘official green Games partner’. The company will provide cash and in-kind contributions.

As part of the agreement, SCGM Berhad will organise a series of roadshows in schools to raise awareness on the proper use and waste management of plastic products.

The company will also provide degradable, disposable lunchboxes and cups, known as ‘Benxon’, for all food and beverages served to officials and athletes during the Games.

SCGM Berhad operates from Kulai in the Malaysian state of Johor, and it is the first local company outside of the Klang Valley region to sponsor Kuala Lumpur 2017.

“It is my hope to see local companies like SCGM rise together and seize the opportunity to work together with us, not only to ensure the best experience of KL2017 for everyone across the region, but to also champion environmental sustainability,” Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Minister, Khairy Jamaluddin, said.

“I believe, with the full support of everyone, KL2017 stories will not be just about the fierce battles on the field and sporting spirit demonstrated by the athletes, but also about the environment and its importance to all of us.”

The Malaysian Organising Committee (MASOC) has now raised 85 per cent of its RM80m (€16.8m/$18.1m) sponsorship target for the Games. MASOC has set a target of raising RM30m in cash and RM50m in the form of products and services. So far, RM20m has been raised in cash, with RM48m having been raised through products and services.

Jamaluddin said he was “quite optimistic” that the RM80m target would be reached before the Games get underway.

The SEA Games will take place from August 19-31, with the ASEAN Para Games to be held from September 17-23.
