India’s Pro Wrestling League pins down title sponsor

Herbal products retailer Patanjali Ayurved has signed on as the title sponsor of India’s Pro Wrestling League franchise competition.

Patanjali has agreed a two-year deal with sports marketing firm ProSportify, the league’s organiser and promoter, to sponsor the competition.

The second season of the PWL had been due to commence on December 15 but financial issues resulted in a two-week delay.

“We are very pleased with the sponsors’ response,” ProSportify director Vishal Gurnani said, according to Indian newspaper the Economic Times. “Yes, we had to delay the season because of demonetisation, but now we have Patanjali as the title sponsor for at least two years and we have also signed Amul as co-sponsor and Essco, Piccadily Agro and Sunflame as associate sponsors.”

Six franchises will compete in the second season of the PWL, which will feature Sakshi Malik (pictured), who picked up a bronze medal for India at the Rio 2016 summer Olympic Games in the women’s freestyle 58kg category.

Wrestlers from Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Colombia, Tunisia, Venezuela and Azerbaijan are also competing in the league.
