GOtv steps in to salvage Cecafa Cup

African pay-television broadcaster GOtv has agreed a title sponsorship package for the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, a national team tournament organised by the Council for East and Central African Football Associations.

The Goal.com website said GOtv has committed KSh11.25m (€97,400/$135,300) towards the competition and will invest a further KSh54m to broadcast all 26 matches.

Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya, whose country will host this year’s tournament from November 22 to December 8, confirmed the deal means there is now enough money to run the event following previous cashflow concerns.

Nyamweya claimed soft-drinks giant Coca-Cola has contributed Sh6.5m, with financial services company UAP adding a further KSh5.5m.

The Cecafa Cup takes place annually. Uganda collected its 13th title when it hosted the 2012 edition.
