German WTA event secures long-term future with sponsor extension

German insurance company Nürnberger Versicherungsgruppe has extended its title sponsorship agreement with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament held in the city of Nürnberg.

The fresh agreement runs through until the 2019 edition of the tournament, which will continue to be officially titled the NürnbergerVersicherungscup. It is set to secure the long-term future of the clay court event, which is staged ahead of the French Open.

Nürnberger Versicherungsgruppe has served as the title sponsor of the tournament since its debut on the WTA Tour in 2013. An International tier event, Nürnberg is the only German city besides Stuttgart to currently host a WTA tournament.

Armin Zitzmann, chief executive of Nürnberger Versicherungsgruppe, said: “We evaluated our commitment immediately after the end of this year’s NürnbergerVersicherungscup. The advertising reached values that were very positive for us. Of course, the outstanding popularity amongst the German tennis fans has also been positive. (This year) we had some temperatures in the single digits plus rain showers during the tournament week. Despite the adverse conditions, we have seen a record crowd. That was the signal for us that the NürnbergerVersicherungscup has arrived in the tennis world.”

The 2017 edition of the event will take place from May 20-27. Kiki Bertens (pictured) of the Netherlands is the defending singles champion.
