Detroit Lions go green with Repreve

NFL American football team Detroit Lions has announced recycled fibre brand Repreve, part of the Unifi manufacturing company, as its official sustainability partner.

The collaboration makes the Lions the first NFL team to partner with Repreve’s #TurnItGreen initiative, which supports stadium-based recycling efforts and encourages fans to recycle their used bottles through the ‘Make the Smart Throw’ campaign.

Detroit Lions’ promotion of the initiative begins in earnest at its Ford Field training camp on Wednesday, where the team’s quarterbacks will wear Repreve green jerseys made from 21 recycled plastic bottles instead of the traditional red. Fans attending the practice will receive #TurnItGreen fan towels made from three recycled bottles, along with other promotional items including t-shirts and autograph cards.

Additionally, the Detroit Lions Academy will use Repreve clothing thoughout the 2014 season, when the brand will benefit from in-stadium activations associated with the Make the Smart Throw campaign and other promotional activities.

The terms of the agreement between Repreve and Detroit Lions were not disclosed.
