IT HAS BEEN an exceptional few days for Korean electronics giant and Olympic sponsor Samsung. First it knocked Finnish rival Nokia off its perch to become the world’s largest mobile handset manufacturer by volume. Then came a statement that it expects to reach a settlement with Apple over a long-standing patents dispute which would further unleash markets for its popular Galaxy smartphone. Finally, it unveiled its next generation handset at a time when others like Blackberry’s RIM and Nokia itself are struggling to bring forward competitive products.
