Santander boss embarrassing guilty verdict likely to herald change of guard

ALFREDO SAENZ CEO of Santander has been sentenced to jail and banned from banking for three months at the end of a 17-year legal battle. Saenz will appeal and publicly Santander, Europe’s biggest bank has stood behind its CEO saying “we do not expect him to miss a single day of work.” In private, the sentence is likely to spark renewed succession planning with Ana Patricia Botin current head of Santander in the UK one of the likely candidates. Botin is a powerful and well-connected figure in Spanish Finance and daughter of Santander Chairman Emilio Botin.
